Privacy

Poor Camp is an interactive fictional project operated by Justin Ward as Poor Camp Publishing. We do not sell personal information or use advertising trackers. This policy explains the limited information used by poor.camp, its contact and mailing-list features, and the Poor Camp Voices Discord application.

Information used by poor.camp

Interactive-fiction continuity

Some experiences use a random browser token stored in a strictly necessary, secure cookie. The server receives a one-way hash of that token and may store a fictional citizen code, fictional Civic Trust values, choices, ratings, viewing progress, conversation-node progress, and similar in-world activity. This provides continuity across participating pages without requiring a real account.

Do not enter real names, addresses, diagnoses, employment information, or other sensitive personal information into fictional government or corporate interfaces.

Unity rooms, forums, and optional accounts

Unity community rooms and forums store messages, discussion threads, replies, reactions, reports, moderation status, fictional citizen identity, and timestamps. Public contributions are visible to other visitors and may remain visible until removed. Citizens may edit their own chat-room messages, with the earlier text and edit time retained in an audit history, but cannot delete those messages. Citizens may edit or archive their own Unity posts and forum contributions. Moderators and administrators may edit or delete chat-room messages and may edit or archive other public contributions; the earlier text, action, staff member, reason, and timestamp are retained to resolve reports and prevent abuse. Material removed from public view remains available to moderators and administrators in the staff record.

Unity also provides private one-to-one messages, private live chats, and member group chats. Private one-to-one content is visible only to its participants during ordinary operation and is not automatically displayed to staff. An administrator—not a moderator—can retrieve a named citizen’s private one-to-one messages only through a separate incident-access control that requires a written reason and an explicit confirmation. Every such retrieval is permanently logged. Group chats are visible to their members and may be scanned or reviewed by moderators and administrators for safety and incident response; those staff access actions are also logged.

An account is optional. Guest participation is linked to the secure browser cookie described above and cannot be recovered after that browser data is lost. If you create or sign into an account and choose to link it, Netlify Identity processes your email address and authentication information and Poor Camp stores the account identifier with your fictional citizen record. This permits cross-device continuity and account recovery, but means your email account and participation record are associated. Passwords are handled by Netlify Identity and are not stored in the Poor Camp database.

Community actions—including visiting, posting, replying, reacting, and reporting—may create fictional score and activity events as part of the artwork’s portal-wide surveillance premise. These scores have no real-world meaning or effect.

Information kept only in the browser

Some experiences still keep their progress in browser storage. Clearing site data may erase that progress. Features that use the server are identified in this policy and will receive visible deletion controls as they become public.

Contact forms and mailing lists

If you submit a contact form, we receive the information you choose to provide, such as your name, email address, organization, message, and optional attachment, so we can respond. Mailing-list and Student Free Copy subscriptions are processed only when you separately submit the corresponding form. Student consent remains separate from the general Poor Camp News list.

Hosting information

Netlify and ordinary internet infrastructure may process request information such as IP address, browser type, requested URL, and timestamp for hosting, delivery, abuse prevention, and security. Poor Camp does not currently load advertising trackers or third-party behavioral-analytics scripts. If optional analytics are introduced, this policy and the visitor controls will be updated before activation.

Angel generated responses

When Angel’s optional generated-response mode is enabled, text you type into Angel and a bounded portion of the recent Angel conversation are sent to OpenAI for safety review and response generation. Do not enter real names, addresses, diagnoses, employment information, or other sensitive personal information.

Poor Camp does not retain the free-text Angel transcript in its database. For each generated exchange, Angel retains up to three broad topic classifications, one short non-verbatim administrative note, a civic classification, and any resulting Civic Trust adjustment. Angel shows the confirmed record update after it is saved. Requests involving immediate safety or ordinary support are not penalized. Individual monitoring events are removed after 90 days, while aggregated topic history and Civic Trust score events may remain part of the continuing fictional citizen record.

Angel also stores limited operational metadata—such as that a generated-response request occurred—to enforce usage limits and prevent abuse. Generated-response requests use OpenAI’s non-storage option for model-response storage, although OpenAI still processes the submitted text to provide and protect the service. If generated responses are disabled or unavailable, Angel uses its authored on-site conversation paths instead.

Poor Camp Voices on Discord

Poor Camp Voices provides clearly labeled AI portrayals of fictional Poor Camp characters through commands such as /talk. The portrayals do not create or change Poor Camp canon.

When you use the application, it may process and store:

• your Discord user ID;
• the Discord server and channel IDs where the command was used;
• the selected character and the message you submitted;
• the generated response and recent conversation history;
• timestamps, moderation status, and limited technical metadata needed to operate and protect the service.

Your message and a bounded portion of recent conversation history are sent to OpenAI for safety review and response generation. Poor Camp requests that generated-response API calls are not stored by OpenAI for model-response storage. Discord necessarily processes activity performed through its platform. Netlify hosts the application functions and database.

Discord identity and poor.camp browser identity are not joined. The application does not receive your email address through these commands.

Retention and deletion

Active Poor Camp Voices conversation sessions expire 30 days after their most recent activity. A daily cleanup removes expired sessions and their messages. You may delete a selected character conversation immediately with /forget or delete all of your stored Poor Camp Voices conversations with /forget-all.

The control below deletes the anonymous poor.camp citizen record connected to this browser: fictional scores and events, Unity profile data, authored Unity contributions, community messages and replies, reactions, reports, subscriptions, direct messages, private live chats, group-chat membership and authored group-chat messages, Halcyon ratings and server-held viewing records, and Angel continuity. Community discussions started by the citizen are retained only as an anonymized deletion notice so replies written by other people are not erased.

This does not delete a Netlify Identity login, Discord conversations, contact-form submissions, or mailing-list subscriptions because those systems use separate identities. Use the relevant account controls, Discord’s /forget commands, unsubscribe link, or the contact page for those records.

Sharing

We use service providers only as needed to operate the project, including Discord, Netlify, OpenAI, form-processing providers, and mailing-list providers. We do not sell personal information. We may disclose information when required by law or when reasonably necessary to protect users, the service, or others.

Young users

Poor Camp Voices is available only through Discord and is not intended for anyone below Discord’s minimum permitted age or the minimum age required in their jurisdiction. We do not knowingly solicit sensitive personal information from children.

Security and international processing

We use reasonable safeguards and minimize the information collected, but no online service can guarantee absolute security. Service providers may process information in the United States and other countries where they operate.

Your choices

• Do not use optional interactive or Discord features.
• Use /forget or /forget-all for Discord conversations.
• Use the anonymous-record deletion control above to remove connected poor.camp activity and clear this browser’s fictional progress.
• Clear poor.camp cookies and browser storage to remove device-held identifiers and progress.
• Participate as a guest instead of linking an optional Unity account.
• Use community reporting tools to request moderator review of public material.
• Unsubscribe through the link in any mailing-list email.
• Use the contact page for access, correction, or deletion requests.

Changes and contact

This policy may change as the project’s features develop. The effective date above will be updated when material changes are published.
