The Empty Pew

Some never miss a service. Others have not crossed the threshold in years. This documentary miniseries follows a group of real people over several months, entering their homes, workplaces, and daily routines to explore the place of church in a Greater American life.

Regular worshippers draw on the friendships, guidance, and practical support of their congregations. Those who remain absent face mounting difficulties: strained relationships, uncertain work, neglected routines, and a growing distance from the people around them. The cameras stay as choices become habits and habits begin to shape a life.

Across the series, we return to each participant as bills arrive, work changes, and family troubles demand an answer. Who has someone to turn to? Who tries to carry everything alone? And what changes when someone finally accepts an invitation to return?

Through sustained observation and candid interviews, The Empty Pew asks what belonging provides—and what a household can lose when its place in the congregation goes unfilled.
